China ruled what is now Vietnam for nearly a thousand years, influencing its religion, customs, art, and architecture. Coastal ports throughout Southeast Asia first developedin the first millennium CE as maritime trade routes expanded between China and India. Today, ethnic Chinese populations are found in all urban and trade centers of Vietnam.
