The native language, Quechua, continues to be spoken in the highlands of Ecuador. Quechua has been spoken in the Andes for centuries — since long before the rise of the Inca empire in the 15th century. Various dialects of Quechua are used in seven different countries in South America — Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Although the Quechua language is in decline, about a quarter of the population of Ecuador is believed to speak Quechua.
