Wool in its raw form is white, gray, or dark brown. In order to produce the dark blue color typically used in the skirts and shawls worn by traditional Otavaleñas, the wool is dyed after being spun into yarn. While some traditional weavers use natural dyes made from nuts, insects, and plants, many craftspeople in Otavalo use synthetic dyes.
