The Virtual Museum of Canada celebrates the stories and treasures that have come to define Canada over the centuries by providing a central access point for rich interactive multimedia virtual exhibits. In addition, select a searchable Image Galleryand a to learn more about teaching with museums.
Exhibits from art, history and science organizations include:
- A Scholar’s Garden is a Classical Chinese Garden that promots greater knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and history.
- Acadia - Lifestyles in the days of our ancestors invites you to discover the French Canadian ancestor?s rich heritage, their culture and their traditions. Look at the architecture of Acadian homes, find out about the tasks of the various family members, get acquainted with the work and tools of Acadian craftsmen, and learn about the functioning of an aboiteau, a typical Acadian construction.
- Anno Domini: Jesus Through the Centuries outlines how Jesus has influenced many key developments in art, science, politics, ideas and culture and explores how artists have portrayed the man and his teachings over the past two millennia.
- Birds is a resource for birders and students provides fascinating insights into local bird species.
- Bone Snow Knives and Tin Oil Lamps includes artifacts from Canada’s First Peoples.
- Butterflies North and South is dedicated to Canada’s and Peru’s most colourful creatures.
- Champlain : Travels in the Canadian Francophonie is about the travels of Samuel de Champlain and celebrats the 400th anniversary of the establishment in Canada in 2004.
- Christmas Traditions in France and in Canada explores the roots of seasonal traditions in both countries.
- Cosmic Quest: Discovering Astronomy Through Science and Culture explores the many ways that people look at the sky. Check out the latest scientific discoveries or experience artistic works inspired by the stars. See how the stars are important to indigenous peoples, including the Indigenous Australians, the Anishinabe of Central North America, and the Blackfoot of the North American Plains.
- Drawing with Light covers light in photography, from early observations on the behaviour of light, to the digital revolution.
- Festivities of the Living and the Dead in the Americas Communities across the Americas have long nurtured homegrown festivities of historic, socio-cultural and economic importance. Tour ten popular and unique festivities in five countries!
- Growing Up in Guelph explores the history and architecture of the City of Guelph. This exhibit allows children to experience rides on streetcars through Guelph and learn more about its immigration, fishing and aboriginal background. Children can also view videos and take a look into the future of this wonderful city!
- Hockey: A Nation’s Passion is a virtual exhibition presenting a dynamic overview of the history of hockey in Canada.
- Horizons: Canadian and Russian Landscape Painting (1860?1940) allows visitors to explore 250 breathtaking paintings brought together, for the first time, from diverse regions of the world?s two largest countries ? Canada and Russia!
- Interactive Investigator Enter the intriguing world of murder scenes, autopsies and scientific evidence and learn about forensic science, a crucial tool in any police force’s crime solving arsenal.
- Living Traditions: Museums Honour the North American Indigenous Gameshonors the spirit and diversity of Indigenous culture and heritage.
- Milestones and Memories examines the 20th century through the clothes of a rural prairie woman.
- Rock’n Metal features underground mining, mineral processing and the rehabilitation of mining sites throughout Quebec.
- Salmon Tales highlights these icons of Canadian waters. Learn about these amazing fish, watch the salmon web cam, see salmon in their spawning phase, and find out how to help salmon remain part of Canada’s future heritage.
- SeasideLive: Marine Ecology and Related Issues is a virtual exploration of fish, the ocean and the coastal marine environment in Atlantic Canada.
- The Memory Collection: 20 Objects from the 20th Century asks What legacy would you like to leave for future generations? What objects symbolize the values, lifestyles, inventions and events of the 20th century?
- Toys & Games reflect the evolution of our society. The main focus of this exhibition is the discovery of games and toys down through the ages. Many collection toys are being showcased in a dynamic and evocative manner in an environment designed to stimulate the senses and the imagination.
- Yukon Photographers: The Gold Rush Era, 1897-1900 After the discovery of gold on Bonanza Creek in 1896, many commercial photographers travelled to Dawson City, photographing the journey and establishing studios along the way. Many of the stampeders also had small roll-film cameras as part of their outfits. The photographers featured here were in the Yukon just before or during the gold rush and are only some of those that photographed the Klondike gold rush.
