FreeTranslation.com is an easy-to-use site for rapid translations where you can get the gist of foreign language text and web pages.

The site uses machine translation which FreeTranslation maintains doesn’t simply translate text word by word but actually analyzes sentences based on the rules of the language and translates the words and phrases in the context of the original document. Although not perfect, machine translation offers a higher level of accuracy and reader comprehension than the standard automatic translation programs currently available.

English text may be copied into a window on the site and translated to Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Chinese or Portuguese. Translations may also be made from Spanish, French, or German to English. If a perfect translation is needed, a double-check by a human is probably in order.

The global nature of the Internet will sometimes bring students to a website entirely in another language. FreeTranslation also has a mechanism that will translate an entire Web site. Type or paste in the URL, and after only a short wait, the entire website will be translated for you. The translation may not be perfect, but the text on the site can be understood.

This is a commercial site and software is available for sale. However, the educational benefits make this a site worth trying.
