Wonders of the African World
On this PBS site, you can learn about the great civilizations, cities and centers of learning which existed in Africa long before any Europeans set foot there. The historical Western view of Africa as a primitive dark continent civilized by white colonists is disputed by this site. There is a section for kids where you can play a fun and informative interactive game. You can help Anansi the spider gain wisdom by exploring the people, places and cultures of Africa. You can also download hands-on craft activities to do at home or at school. There is a section for the classroom that has lesson plans for grades K-12, complete with downloadable student activity sheets and answer keys. This section of the site incorporates television and computers as learning tools in the subject areas of computer skills, mathematics, social studies, and language arts. The site utilizes audio and video recordings, as well as text and photographs.
