Explore this online exhibition from the Library of Congress that displays the Prokudin-Gorskii photographic record, as photographer to the tsar. “The photographs of Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) offer a vivid portrait of a lost world, the Russian Empire on the eve of World War I and the coming revolution. His subjects ranged from the medieval churches and monasteries of old Russia, to the railroads and factories of an emerging industrial power, to the daily life and work of Russia’s diverse population.”In this exhibit, you will be able to explore visually the architecture, ethnic diversity, transportation, and work of the Russian peoples from the times of Prokudin-Gorskii. There is a special section that describes the process of making color images from the negatives and resources for learning more about this historical photographer and his country.
