In January 2000, a team of marine scientists from the University of Delaware departed on their first deep-sea expedition of the new millennium. Using Alvin, a deep-sea submarine from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the team explored hydrothermal vents in the Sea of Cortez off the west coast of Mexico and studied the organisms that inhabit them. This multimedia website is divided into five major sections each accompanied by a corresponding Quicktime video.
- Mission and Crew: Introduces, the crew, its mission, the location, and the vessels Atlantis and Alvin.
- Sea Floor Geology: Explores the deep sea, the mid-ocean ridge, plate tectonics, and hydrothermal vents.
- Creature Features: Looks at the tubeworm, vent crab, pompeii worm, and ancient bacteria.
- Toxic Chemistry: Investigates hydrothermal vents, ancient bacteria, tools for analysis, and chemosynthesis.
- High-Tech Tools: Examines the tools used aboard the Atlantis and Alvin and provides a history of devices used in the deep sea.
Extreme 2000 also features a dive log of the crew’s activities, a daily journal, interviews, and a recording of a telephone call between classrooms and the crew on the sub.
