National Geographic’s Crittercam “is a research tool designed to be worn by wild animals. It combines video and audio recording with collection of environmental data such as depth, temperature, and acceleration. Safely worn by wildlife, Crittercam gives us rare views of the private lives of animals. By allowing us this animal’s-eye view, Crittercams help to solve scientific mysteries. And what we learn from Crittercams helps us protect the very animals that wear them.”At this interactive website, students can take a journey into virtual worlds that explore the wildlife of the Artic, Antarctica, and the deep sea. They can explore the Map of Expeditions to find out where Crittercam conducted research and what was discovered. And they can take part in interactive missions that allow kids to build and deploy Crittercams for Emperor Penguins, Hawaiian Monk Seals, Humpback Whales, Leatherback Sea Turtles, and Tiger Sharks. There are also animal pictures for kids to color, quizzes and games to play, and email postcards they can send to their friends and family.Teachers will find a collection of lesson plans related to this material for grades 3-5 and 6-8 about many aquatic animals and the issues that these creatures face.
