North American Drought: A Paleo Perspective
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/drought/
Beginning with a quotation from John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, which memorialized America’s Dust Bowl of the 1930’s, this site from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s Paleoclimatology Program describes how drought is defined, why it causes concern, the history of 20th Century drought, and how paleoclimatology is related to drought.Explore instrumental records of drought for the United States extend back approximately 100 years as well as proxy records (tree rings, historical documents, etc.) that provide clues to the natural history of drought 500 years ago, 2000 years, and even longer. Check out the site map’s data appendix to access data sets for specific regions in the United States.
