CareerOneStop for students and career advisors provides information in fours major areas: interests and talents, exploring careers, work experience, and education options.
The “Identify your Interests” section helps students to assess their interests, talents and skills. It has a “skills profiler” tool that matches a student’s skills to careers. Using the “job seeker” tool, students can search over 600 online resources that look at jobs, provide career exploration tools, and more. Links to O*Net career explorations tools are helpful to guidance counselors and advisors.
In the “Explore Careers” section, students can see industry profiles and find the industries that are in demand. The competency model clearinghouse provides industry competency models “which promote an understanding of the skill sets and competencies that are essential to educate and train a globally competitive workforce.”
The third area is “Get Work Experience.” It explains work and training options including internships, apprenticeships, and military service. It also helps students understand how to apply for a job, write a resume, and locate potential employers. It also has a section with links to job boards especially for students.
The last section is about education options. Is college worth it? Check out the chart to see how education affects future earnings. Learn about the fastest growing occupations, the education they require, and “create charts that will also show how much a student can expect to earn in those jobs.” This section shows students how to find the right programs and ways to pay for college.
