Provided by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History “this site explores a period of U.S. history when racial prejudice and fear upset the delicate balance between the rights of a citizen and the power of the state. Focusing on the experience of Japanese Americans who were placed in detention camps during World War II, this online exhibit is a case study in decision-making and citizen action under the U.S. Constitution.”
Students can chose between the rich media version with audio, digitized photographs, and video or the printable version to explore the content. The major topics of focus include: Immigration, Removal, Internment, Loyalty, Service, and Justice and are broken into sub-categories, each richly illustrated, with secondary source descriptions. Under Resources there are relevant web links and teaching activities for elementary, middle, and high school students.
