Baldy Editorial Cartoons, 1946-1982, 1997: The Clifford H. Baldowski Collection at the Richard B. Russell Library contains 6,740 pen and ink drawings and 2,460 velox. A joint project between the Russell Library and the Digital Library of Georgia created an online database containing approximately 2,500 cartoons from this collection. The cartoons, along with supplementary supporting materials such as a commentary on Baldy’s cartooning, a biographical essay, as well as suggested reading links, are available through the Digital Library of Georgia, a GALILEO initiative that provides online access to Georgia’s history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, audio, video and other materials.The digital database opens with approximately 2,500 cartoons from the collection. Clifford H. Baldowski, known by the pen-name “Baldy,” depicted the local, national and international news of his day in the editorial pages of the Augusta Chronicle, Miami Herald, and Atlanta Constitution. His work is a rich source for those studying political reorganization in Georgia and the growth of Atlanta as well as the the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict, Middle East tensions, and Watergate.Cartoons may be searched, viewed, saved and emailed for future use. All cartoons are cataloged by subject.
