“Science, Optics and You is a science curriculum package being developed for teachers, students, and parents. These activities are designed to promote the asking and answering of questions related to light, color, and optics. The program begins with basic information about lenses, shadows, prisms, and color, leading up to the use of sophisticated instruments scientists use to help them understand the world. The goal of Science, Optics and You is for students to acquire the skills with which they can do microscopic analysis of a variety of samples in multiple ways.”
The site features features the Web’s largest collection of color photographs taken through an optical microscope (commonly referred to as “photo-micro-graphs”). Also the site includes activities written by educators with input from scientists, researchers, students, and teachers which are provided to help investigate light, optics, and color.
- Highlights include:
- Activities for Students includes 16 activities and 10 inquiry projects related to light, optics, and lenses.
- Teacher Resources provides background information and teacher resources related to each of the student activities and inquiry projects one the site.
- Timeline with hyperlinks to describe in more detail key events and personalities in optics.
- Interactive Tutorials uses Java to provide a visual representation of key concepts.
