Ad*Access is an online exhibition of over 7,000 newspaper and magazine ads from Duke library’s J. Walter Thompson Company Archives located in the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History. Ads in this online collection fit into one of five categories:

  • Beauty and Hygiene
  • Radio
  • Television
  • Transportation
  • World War II
Students may choose to browse the ads within these subject categories. In the browsing section, a brief history of each of the subjects is provided and each category is broken down further into subcategories and dates. The alternate option is to search the entire collection of advertisements at once, either by keyword or by an illustration/special features menu.A Timeline “features a chronology of major events and interesting facts in international affairs; United States government and politics; companies, inventions, discoveries and technology; humanities and the arts; entertainment and sports ; and a miscellaneous section” to provide context for the ad collection.Technical information and frequently asked questions are also addressed on this website.
