artNC
The website artNC brings items from the North Carolina Museum of Art collection right to your computer at home or at school. There are many ways to locate specific pieces and to make connections between the artwork and your world. You may chose to explore geographic origin, or you might simply search the site to find paintings, sculptures, mosaics, household items and religious relics from ancient times to the present. The Works of Art page even allows you to narrow your search by artist and medium! Once you locate an item of interest, there is the option to View Larger Image just under the image and a Map link just above the image so you can see where in the world this item came from. Each item is described in detail and you may post a question, read posted comments, or navigate to related items from that page.
Thematic curricula on artNC are aligned to national standards and available by grade level and discipline. The first unit created was Art & Nature, more recent units include The American Experience, Painting the Light, and Reading Art. These units model an integrated approach to teaching, incorporating the arts throughout activities that address critical skills and content in language, math, science and social studies. Focus works related to the theme are pictured and described on the theme page; select one to learn more about the work and to find the teaching ideas and related instructional resources. Don’t miss the Go a Step Further to access related works on the left or use the Artwork Explorer bar at the top of the page to scroll through thumbnails of related works.
If you have explored the thematic unit you can then browse for resources designed to reach the age and subjects you are teaching. From the home page, select the grade level and discipline you are interested in and the search will return just the works of art and lesson plans that match your selections. You can even narrow your selection by region to complement any international content you may be teaching or to accompany a work of literature that takes place anywhere in the world. The Resource Room provides teachers with program information, professional development opportunities and lending materials available for classroom use offered by the North Carolina Museum of Art and other arts institutions around the state. There are dozens of entries, be sure to look for the link at the bottom of the page to move through the next 10 items on the list.
The Teachers’ Lounge and the Student Center both include a forum for discussion. Take a moment to use the online form in the Teachers’ Lounge to sign up for the email updates and program information mailings.
This website is a great beginning; more themes and many more works of art are to be added in the future. Browsing by theme is one of the best ways to locate instructional resources. If you do choose to search, be careful when you narrow your search… if you select to use region, grade and subject you may get no results. Try using two of the three criteria to search and the search results will be better.
