Each year, NCTAN offers a 35 hour seminar to qualified educators who teach students about Asia. Each Saturday beginning in October and ending in March, teachers meet to learn more about Asia.
The 2005-2006 topic is East Asia. The major themes to be covered in the seminar are the geographic determinants shaping the culture, history and economic development of East Asia; the nature of East Asian society, politics, and culture; interactions among East Asian societies; and East Asian history in the context of world history. The countries of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam are the primary focus of the seminar. Each teacher will receive a $500 stipend, $200 worth of books on East Asia, and $300 for their school library to purchase teaching materials on East Asia. They will be eligible to participate in a study trip to East Asia in which about 90% of the cost is funded. Teachers must apply for this program by April 15th.
In addition, North Carolina Teaching Asia Network has outreach programs. Alumni of the program visit schools and present what they have learned to students. Presentations topics are in the arts, social studies, and English Language Arts.
