Ad Dissection 101 is part of Web Sites for Educators, a collection of teaching resources created and compiled by an high school English teacher from Wisconsin. This resource is intended to be a unit of instruction in the classroom for high school students “to learn how to become responsible, conscious, and critical consumers” and is “designed to teach students how to interpret the messages commercials send, so they can make informed choices based on well reasoned decisions.”This site is divided into sections that the student will use to complete activities and the Teacher’s Page, which includes all of the resources needed to teach this unit of instruction. In the Introduction, students learn what type of activities are part of the course and are invited to take the Ad Slogan Quiz. Moving on to tasks, students will work through three assignments: How to Read an Ad, Advertising Appeals and Claims, and designing an ad. The first two should be accompanied by worksheets provided by their instructor. Finally, the students move on to read the Conclusion and provide feedback. In addition to worksheets and additional resources, the Teacher’s Page includes content and purpose of the unit, target audience, setting, time frame, and objectives.
