1901: Living at the Time of the Census

To celebrate the public release of the 1901 census, the Public Records Office in the United Kingdom developed this online exhibit, 1901: Living at the Time of the Census, which consists of four galleries.
- Cinema includes a collection of 1901 video clips.
- People and Places of 1901 combines images, transcripts, and voice recordings along with other historical sources and images to illustrate how the census can be used to trace family and community history. In People learn about the life of a typist, a telephone operator, a war widow, and others. Places portrays East Tuddenham, Senghenydd, Spitalfields, and Salford at the time of the census.
- Living in 1901 is divided into eight themes including Making a Living, Education, On the Move, A Place to Live, Food and Drink, Health, Time Out, and Crime and Punishment.
- In Events of 1901, find a timeline of newsworthy happenings, information about Britain’s political and economic situation, and a history of the census.
