WhaleNet - From Wheelock College
You can learn about whales as you follow the travels of sea creatures in the Active Satellite Tagging Data section of this site. Articles, research papers on Whale Net Projects, the NOAA Whale Watch Guidelines, and hurricane information and maps are available on this site, as well. This National Science Foundation sponsored site has information on harbor porpoises, elephant seals, loggerhead turtles, and whales. The data available through tracking can be used for a variety of projects, such as middle and high school math and environmental science. In addition to data, there are directions for analyzing data, links to information about the animals (some at elementary level), and curriculum materials (including creating a map of a desired area using latitude and longitude coordinates and computing distances using city names, longitude/latitude, or zip codes, and downloadable blank maps for plotting the tracking coordinates). Probably the easiest place to begin is with the archive of completed trackings. (Scroll down to archived projects). This site is in Portuguese, as well as the other listed languages.
