The Web Gallery of Art contains digital reproductions of European paintings and sculptures created between the years 1150 and 1800. There are written comments for much of the art and biographies of some of the artists. You can look for items in the collection using various search criteria or take guided tours to see historical or artistic connections. The Web Gallery of Art is a site for the Renaissance art which originated in the Italian city-states of the 14th century and fluorished and spread to other countries in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Byzantine and Gothic roots from the 13th and 14th centuries, Renaissance art, itself, as well as its evolution to Baroque via Mannerism in the 16th and 17th centuries, is represented. You can even play music from the period while you are looking at the art.
