The Red Wolf Recovery Project began as an online project of the North Carolina Zoo to preserve and study the Red Wolf in North Carolina. The zoo plays a vital role in the red wolf’s Species Survival Plan recovery program, maintaining a captive breeding program and working to educate the public about wolves. The Red Wolves of Alligator River online project on Field Trip Earth allows students to glimpse the process of reintroducing this species to the Alligator River area of North Carolina’s Albemarle Sound. The website offers many articles and other resources for those wishing to learn more about Canis rufus.
The Red Wolf site contains information about the species, its history, and the geographical region being studied as well as opportunities for students to interact with experts. Students can also participate in online discussion forums. Lesson plans that integrate the resources on the site are available for grades K-8 and various curriculum areas. Because the wolf’s role in culture, literature, and myth play such an important role in debates over its reintroduction, the site encourages students to explore those areas as well as their own feelings about wolves.
