The National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art features European and American paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, graphic arts, and temporary exhibitions of art from countries and cultures throughout the world. Search the collection by specific artist, title, or a combination of criteria. Data on all of the more than 100,000 objects in the National Gallery of Art’s collection can be found using the search capabilities.
Virtual access to the collections is available through a variety of online collection tours. Users can tour the collection by medium, dates or schools; for example, the sculpture tour highlights 3 or 4 works from each of 10 “zones” including Early Modern Figure, Medieval, Chinese Porcelains, Rodin, and 18th Century Sculpture. Other gallery highlights include tours of select paintings (by date and regional origin), decorative arts and architecture.
In-depth studies focus on artists and a featured works of art. These online exhibits are visually rich and include biographical information, timelines, and other contextual information. Topics include movements such as Art Nouveau, artist-specific exhibits like The Life and Works of Thomas Moran, and individual works such as Johannes Vermeer’s “Woman Holding a Balance.” Two multimedia slideshows with audio analysis are available, one focused on the painting Right and Left by Winslow Homer, and the second on Adoration of the Magi by Fra Angelico and Filippo Lippi.
The Education section of the site provides access to lesson plans, online activities, teachers guides and resources for social studies, arts, science, math and English language arts classes.
