Classrooms, school libraries and public libraries participate in the process of selecting, studying and voting for the North Carolina Children’s Book Award winners. Titles are nominated by children then selected for consideration by the North Carolina Library Association’s children’s committee. Lists of the books are distributed and teachers and librarians across the state make these titles avilable to the children. Depending upon the age of the children, they may read the nominees in the Picture Book or the Junior Book categories, and then vote for their favorite title. An activity booklet developed by librarians and other educators includes aligned, interdisciplinary activities so teachers can easily implement this program in their classroom.
The North Carolina Children’s Book Award, which began in 1992, is sponsored by the North Carolina Library Association. The purpose of award is…
…to encourage lower elementary students to become better acquainted with the best writers of contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal. To broaden students’ awareness of literature as a means of personal satisfaction and life-long pursuit. To promote reading aloud with students inthe early grades as a means of introducing reading as a pleasure. To give recognition and honor to their favorite books and authors of them.
