Poet at Work: Recovered Notebooks from the Thomas Biggs Harned Walt Whitman Collection
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/whitman/index.html
The Thomas B. Harned collection of the Walt Whitman papers spans the period 1842 to 1937, with most of the items dated from 1855 to 1892.
This collection offers access to the four Walt Whitman Notebooks and a cardboard butterfly that disappeared from the Library of Congress in 1942. They were returned on February 24, 1995. The four worn notebooks contain early pencil drafts of his poetry, cryptic observations of life on the battlefield and death in Civil War hospitals, and detailed notes such as a reporter would make for later reference.
The site also has Collection Connection resources for educators to use this collection in the classroom. They cover three subject areas: United States history, critical thinking, and arts and humanities. Each section breaks down areas of the work books and students analyze what was written.
