The NIH Curriculum Supplement Series are interactive teaching units that combine cutting-edge science research discoveries from the National Institutes of Health, one of the world’s foremost medical research centers, with state-of-the-art instructional materials.
Students in first and second grades can learn about the importance of oral health in Open Wide and Trek Inside! They will not only learn about tooth decay, but also about the structures and the functions of the mouth, bacteria in the mouth, and how to keep the mouth healthy.
Middle school students will learn about the brain, alcohol and its effect on the human body, and mental illness. Students will also explore energy and the relationship of calorie intake and physical activity. They will also learn about the interaction of body systems as they explore bones, muscles, and skin.
High school students will study more advanced topics. Their modules include Cell Biology and Cancer, Sleep, Sleep Disorders, and Biological Rhythms, Using Technology to Study Cellular and Molecular Biology, Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases, Human Genetic Variation, The Brain: Understanding neurobiology through the Study of Addiction, and Chemicals, The Environment, and You: Explorations in Science and Human Health.
Modules can be used online or downloaded and burned to CD-ROM. Print materials may be ordered. The materials are free to teachers and administrators.
