North Carolina’s public schools must comply with the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law on Jan. 8, 2002. This national effort to improve schools and meet student’s needs focuses on greater accountability, more flexibility and broad reporting of results. Requirements to improve schools also include assuring that students have “highly qualified” teachers. Under this act, if schools are unable to comply, parents may select to move their child to a school that is performing at or above adequate yearly progress (AYP). This website explains this program as it effects North Carolina schools.
