TeachUNICEF
The goal of TeacchUNICEF is to help teachers make their students aware of global issues by fostering an understanding of the needs of children and families around the world. To help reach this goal, this site provides lesson plans for grades 3- 12, along with some other resources. The units cover topics such as clean water, poverty, gender equality and the Millenium goals set by the UN.
In the unit overview, objectives for the unit are clearly stated, and for each day, the ways in which students will demonstrate their understanding are listed. The overview also gives interdisciplinary connections, along with service learning project ideas. Within each lesson plan, you will find detailed instructions, activities, and possible assignments.
Following the lesson plans, the site shows what national standards apply to the lessons and provides all the handouts required for the lessons. A number of sound educational methods are used, including graphic organizers and cooperative learning. For all units there are plans for middle school and for high school. There is also a plan for upper elementary on clean water. These are available as pdf downloads.
In addition to great lesson plans, the site also provides a link to another “mini-site” where UNICEF has used the tsunami of 2004 as a case study to demonstrate how they respond to emergencies. This mini-site includes resources for teachers on how to create service learning projects. From the TeachUNICEF main page, you can subscribe to a newsletter, link to UNICEF games, and go to the UNICEF Voices of Youth website.
