The Globe Program
The GLOBE Program is a worldwide,hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program. Hosted by a range of government agencies, this effort seeks to build a data collection while at the same time involving students in authentic scientific activities. Students take scientifically valid measurements in the fields of atmosphere, hydrology, soils, and land cover, depending on what they are studying, and then report their data via the Internet to the student data archive. In addition to data collection and contribution, many projects include GLOBEMail activities between partnering schools, GLOBE chat with scientists, and other opportunities for student learning.Although most opportunities for participation are open to a wide range of locations, some are site-specific. The Environmental Study of the North Carolina/Virginia New River, a data collection project for grades 9-12, is a site-specific effort that is seeking collaborators. The Global Information Systems (GIS) Digital Earth project is open to anyone anywhere; participants are asked to collect GLOBE data, GPS data, and photographs that they feel represent their place and environment. Projects may be year-round, as these two are, or limited to a specific time frame. The Earth week cloud watch, for example, spans just one week in April. You do not have to be a contributing classroom to access data on the Web. You can look up data sets by location, topic, and date. Using the Data Access search tool, you can refine your request to get just the data you need. Visualizations provide maps and graphs of the many data sets available on the topic of cloud, climate, atmosphere, and/or hydrology.Visit the Educator’s Corner for classroom assessment tools, standards alignment, learning activities (not data collection projects but stand-alone activities), as well as implementation and teacher’s guides. Teachers must attend training to get their students involved in data collection projects, and some participation efforts require the purchase of equipment.
