http://www.plasticforkdiaries.org/
Plastic Fork Diaries is a website from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with interactive episodes that will allow you to follow six middle school students as they experience first-hand the relationship between food and their changing bodies, cultural differences, the vanishing family meal, nutrition and athletic performance. Snoop through their lockers, read their diaries, and more.In addition to the interactive episodes that provide the story-line for this site, there are many other features and activities:
- Info Bites. Here you’ll find basic information and exotic facts about something you’ve discovered in one of the episodes. It’s usually a particular food, but it might be a place famous for some strange ingredient, or a famous cook, or an unusual way cooking something. This information will include history, cooking techniques, nutritional and medicinal values, and odd facts. Learn about cuts of beef, soy milk, tater tots, and more.
- Recipes. An online cookbook is designed to help you prepare food that your family will actually enjoy. You’ll find everything from down-home cooking to dishes from the other side of the world. A few examples sure to make your stomach growl include Shrimp Pad Thai, cinnamon toast, fluffernutter sandwiches, and spicy micro-baked beans.
- Inside University. Ever wonder what spit is for? Or why some foods make you fart? Or how your stomach manages to make noise? All is explained in the Phood Physiology course here at Inside U, where you get all the facts about your body and food, no matter how disgusting.
- Online Field Trips. Go behind the scenes at unusual places where food is grown and prepared: a pumpkin farm and even a school cafeteria.
