In March of 2000, the IMAGE satellite was launched. IMAGE stands for Imager for Magnetopause - to - Aurora Global Exploration. The goal for POETRY, the outreach arm of the IMAGE program, is to educate teachers, students, and the public on solar storms and their effect the Earth, the causes of auroras, and to correct misconceptions about Earth’s magnetic field, its radiation belts.
The site features in-depth information and images on the subjects of solar wind, space weather, solar storms, space radiation, magnetic fields, the Van Allen Belts, and auroras. A multimedia gallery provides movies, images and unusual sounds from space. The “Ask the Space Scientist” section has the most frequently asked questions on the Sun, the solar system, Planet-X, stars, galaxies, black holes, Big Bang Cosmology, and much more.
Educators will find numerous resources including activities and study guides, an IMAGE satellite tutorial, and weekly space/mathematical problems for middle and high school students.
