Gerry E. Studds-Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary
“The Gerry E. Studds-Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary’s mission is to conserve, protect, and enhance the biodiversity, ecological integrity, and cultural legacy of this 842-square-mile stretch of open water and the seafloor below located at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay.” Part of the National Sanctuaries Program from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the website is under development and creating a great collection of online educational materials, which upon its completion will contain:
- On-Line courses in naturalist training, biodiversity, whaling to watching, sanctuary, and the Great Auk project
- A virtual dive
- A Just for Kids page and information about the poster contest
- Tales From Stellwagen Bank, a collection of essays that include a rescue of a humpback whale and explorations of the wonders of the marine world
There is already a good amount of information and images of the area’s wildlife, with more to come. Learn about:
- Whale species, behaviors, sounds, watching, and the top 40 humpback whales
- Birds, turtles and fish
- Shipwrecks
Other resources include a Fish ID Course, a Great American Fish Count, the See-A-Spout Program, and the Watchable Wildlife Program. Some of these materials are under development at the time this was written. Check back often!
