Revising Himself : Walt Whitman and Leaves of Grass

In 1855 Walt Whitman published Leaves of Grass and over the years he made many revisions. This exhibit “traces the different occupations and preparations that led Whitman to become the author of Leaves of Grass, as well as his subsequent evolution as a poet.”
Displayed are selected Whitman manuscript drafts and notes for poems written across the stages of his career as well as drafts of his prose and oratory. It also includes a complete set of first editions of Whitman’s master work, as well as a map of his travels around the nation.
