This program was launched by the U.S. Department of Education in response to the events surrounding September 11, 2001. This initiative has developed a consortium of ten organizations, known for supporting cross-cultural exchange among young people worldwide. The consortium works to create interactions between the youth of the world both online and off line to promote peace and understanding. The beginning objective is for interaction between U.S. schools and those in Islamic countries, including Egypt, Indonesia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Bahrain and Afghan refugee camps.
Friends through Education provides “Internet-based communications among students, assists with translations and facilitates classroom projects.” Consortium organizations offer activities of different levels of interaction and participation. The teacher’s section has links to international education resources.
