This website is the online companion of the exhibition which celebrates the Jay I. Kislak Collection of over 4,000 rare books, maps, documents, paintings, prints, and artifacts donated to the Library of Congress. The exhibition focuses on the time of the indigenous people of the early Americas through the period of European exploration and settlement. Themes include the pre-Columbian cultures of Central America and the Caribbean through sculpture, architecture, and language. Also explored is the growth of European Florida, and piracy and trade in the American Atlantic.
On the website, students can explore the individual objects in an interactive seventeenth-century book, The Buccaneers of America. In addition, the Tortuguero Box interactive allows students to examine and decipher the ancient Mayan culture hieroglyphs of this wooden box.
