In a effort to make history more understandable and enjoyable, the British Broadcasting Company has developed eight areas of study, each with a collection of History Trails. Each “trail” has extensive articles, an activity, and a quiz to test how much you have learned. The topics include the Church and State, Family History, War and Conflict, How to do History, Victorian Britain, Local History, Conquest, and Archaeology.
As an example, look at the subject “Victorian Britain”. Learn about industrialization in Great Britain and how the people earned a living. The activity ” Who wants to be a cotton millionaire?” gives the viewer choices to make in order to become successful in the textiles area. Each decision you make along the way will ultimately result in making you either a millionaire or sending you to debtors’ prison. At the end of the “trail” take the quiz to see how much you have learned.
This interactive approach to learning helps put familiar things put into a historical context. Trails do not have to be done in any particular order as each one stands on its own.
