The Big 6 - Information Literacy for the Information Age
Developed by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz, The Big6 process model has six stages which help people solve information problems. The stages are:
- Task Definition
- Information Seeking Strategies
- Location and Access
- Use of Information
- Synthesis
- Evaluation
The Big6 can also be used in all subject areas and in all grade levels. “Students use the Big6 Skills whenever they need information to solve a problem, make a decision, or complete a task.”
The Big6 website is full of valuable resources. There is a section of lesson plans for grades K-12 which provides ideas on how to implement the Big6 in the classroom. A section on research, shows how the Big6 compares to other research models, how it has been implemented in schools, how it has been used as a “metacognitive scaffold”, and more. The Big6 store sells books and other materials that be used in conjunction with the model. Workshops and presentations are also offered which enhance their understanding of the Big6 concepts.
