Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest
In the Spring of 2005, students participated in a pilot program of Poetry Out Loud. By memorizing and performing poems of some of the world’s greatest poets, students were able to compete for scholarships. This year all states will have competitors. Beginning at the classroom level, winners from each class will advance to a school-wide competition.“ Each school will then send a finalist to the state-capital competition. Today, the competition has one student from each state competing in the National Finals in Washington, DC.
The classroom program takes several weeks and can be completed at any time during the months of January through March. The program satisfies nearly all the NCTE English Language Arts Standards. Teachers can use the lesson plans provided on the website to inspire students to discuss the poetry and even create their own poems.
Poetry Out Loud allows students to browse the poems and poets as well as listen to audio of recitation of some of the poems. It has tips on performance techniques and audio of of &ldquuo:great recitations by some of our best-known actors and writers.”
