This award-winning international environmental education program is designed for K-12 educators and uses trees as “windows” to help students gain awareness in the world around them and to help them realize their place in it.
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program designed for educators of ANY background. The hands-on activities facilitate the exploration of topics including communication, economics, energy and fuels, geology, government, history, recycling, transportation, watersheds, and wildlife. Differentiated instruction? Technology connections? Literature links? Standard course of study? The PLT activity guide covers it all, and the PreK-8 guide is correlated to the NC Standard Course of Study in science, math, language arts, and social studies. Secondary modules (8th - 12th grades) focus on issues including risks, forestland, municipal solid waste, and communities; and help students discover how these issues effect their community.
Check out their Greenworks program. Educators can team up with a business, nonprofit, or other community organization on an environmental action project. It is a great way to help students make a difference in their community and “understand their relationship to the environment.” Grants, which are awarded in the spring and fall, are available to help teachers set up a project. Project Learning Tree offers a guide to help you get your project started.
Professional development workshops are offered at various locations throughout the state. Please refer to their workshop calendar for more details.
