One of the first zoos to establish a scientific program, the National Zoological Park works toward addressing problems that face wild animals, such as habitat loss and declines in population. The zoo collaborates with other experts around the world to “strengthen our research in reproductive biology, veterinary medicine, behavior, ecology, population biology, nutrition, migratory birds, biodiversity monitoring, and professional training in most of these disciplines.”
The Conservation Biology Institute of the Zoo offers education and training programs for K-12 students and educators in science and mathematics. “Interns in these programs work with scientists to understand the background of resident species and ongoing research, in order to assist in the design of educational programs based on current projects.”
