Zoom Into Maps

The project consists of beautiful digital images of maps in the Department’s collection with explanations and guides through several collections. For maps representing explorations in different regions, cultures, and societies information is frequently provided in English and the language natural to the geographic location in question. For example, Selection from the Geography and Maps Collection highlighting The Russian Discoveries, 1776 is provided in both English and Russian. There is also a link to Unusual Maps from the homepage, which includes such interesting examples as: the kingdom of France (1796) in the form of a ship, the Gerry-mander (a new species of monster) from 1812, and Rand-McNally & Co’s “new 12-inch terrestrial globe, 1891.”
