The maps on this site are organized into themes, with three maps supporting each theme. From each map’s webpage a brief history of the map and its location are provided in addition to lesson plans which are divided into grade ranges (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). Maps also include a link to Curator’s Notes, which are a more detailed explanation and investigation of the digitized image, and Resources, many of which include links to supplemental images.

There is a first-time user’s guide, which outlines the technology needs to use the site. You can access the first-time users guide from the homepage or the Instructions for Teachers page.

On the Instructions for Teachers page links are provided to: General Organization and Use of the Site, National Standards for Geography and Social Studies, Displaying and Printing Supplied Images and Text, and Reading Historic Maps and General Resources on Cartography.
