This site is a compendium of information providing an organized reference point to resources available from National Geographic. Lesson plans can be viewed by grade range; they are also organized by grade range within the following categories: most popular, editor’s picks, and teacher’s picks.
Each lesson plan is organized into three key areas: Introduction, Presenting the Lesson, and Extending the Lesson. The Introduction is composed of: overview, connections to curriculum and National Geography Standards, duration, materials, and objectives. The Presentation is composed of: initial presentation, activity, and connecting elements to unwrap the big picture. Extending the Lesson provides opportunities and suggestions for driving the lesson and its core values home. For example, in Lighting Up the Sea one extension includes having students play different bioluminescent organisms enacting their characteristics in a skit.
