¡del Corazón! Latino Voices in American Art
This is an updated version of the original ¡del Corazón! which was first launched in 1996. Today, visitors to the site can view it in English and Spanish.
The site features six artists. Click on the photograph of an artist and read a short biography of the artist and information on their featured work of art. Video clips of the artists discussing their work provide insight into how they view the world through their art.
Explore the twelve works of art in the Galeria section. Click on a work of art and read about the artist. Each work of art can be enlarged for closer examination. The size of the work, the media used, and a list of things to look for in the piece are given.
Artists find inspiration in may places. They may find inspiration in “memories of family and friends, social concerns, cultural beliefs and customs, artistic traditions in their community, and in the artistic process itself.” Three themes are explored in the Inspiracion section: Artists and Their Communities, Weaving Tradition of the Rio Grande, and Processes and Techniques. The site provides standards-based curricula and supporting resources. Lesson plans “include standards-based materials incorporating the museum’s Latino art collection as it relates to American history, civics, language, and visual arts.” Educators can incorporate free videoconferences into their teaching. Teach students about learning from their families with the “Quilted Landscapes: Expressions of assimilation” or see how artists represent Latin American heroes in the “Latino Leaders: Defining and representing heroism.” Resource lists are available for each plan. Educators will also find free printable 8.5” x 11” posters of artwork which can be downloaded.
