Coalition of Essential Schools
http://www.essentialschools.org/
A five year study of high schools first published in 1984 acted as the basis for Coalition’s founding. The first members included twelve schools in seven states. The coalition seeks to support partner schools in their efforts to create “personalized, equitable, and academically challenging schools.”
Currently 600 schools are actively participating in the Coalition. Participation varies by member institution; participation can include being a CES National Affiliate school to seeking coaching from regional centers to attending the Fall Forum.
The Common Principles relate to both middle and high schools. There are ten common principles that guide participating educational institutions.
The small school project is a five year project seeking to create mentor schools, the creation of a mentor schools handbook, and the recruitment of new schools.
