This collection has two parts. The digitized photographs are of school buildings and students taken in the early 1900s. These photographs illustrate education in western North Carolina and include school buildings from Jackson and Swain counties, the Sylva Collegiate Institute, the Cullowhee Normal & Industrial School, and the Training School operated by the federal government for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The second part of the collection includes letters written during the Civil War by Confederate soldiers and their friends and family members. There are also letters to Joseph Cathey, a community leader, requesting help during those hard times. Most of the letters were written between 1862 and 1863. These letters which have been transcribed and are also available to view, include information on “health and sickness; family welfare and conditions on the home front; news of camp life and military operations; prospects for crops and livestock; and the weather.”
