The organizers of this site have classroom experience in addition to experience working with teachers who are trying to implement literature circles in their classrooms.
A literature circle is a small group of students gathered to discuss a book selected by the group. Conversations center around the student’s perspective of the book rather than from a lecture. Book selection is determined by the student, encouraging a sense of ownership of the assignment. Group assignment can vary from assignment to assignment depending on each student’s book selection.
There are links to information on the use of literature circles in the classroom in addition to other literacy research. There is also a link to the history of literature circles and how they have grown in popularity.
The Review page provides guidance when deciding which books to select or offer as a choice in the literature circles process. The Kids section page offers links to reviews and resources based on grade range.
