From 1485 to 1603, the Tudors reigned over England and it is perhaps one of the most interesting periods of British history. It was the time of Henry VII, Henry VIII and his six wives, Queen Mary, King Edward and Elizabeth I. It was also a period of religious turmoil and the Reformation. This detailed site explores 16th Century England through text, images, and interactive multimedia.
Visitors to this site can read why Henry VIII is such a popular figure, learn about the Reformation, and Anne Boleyn and her family in essays written by historians. Although mostly text, students will also learn about Elizabeth I, the Spanish Armada, Mary Queen of Scots, William Shakespeare, and more.
Interactive sections allow students to explore Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose, and the effort to conserve her. A virtual tour of an Elizabethan room gives a glimpse of the interior of a wealthy person’s home. Take another tour of the famous London Bridge. The “Kings and Queens Through Time” interactive explores 4 periods of English rule: the Plantagenets and the Houses of Lancaster and York, the Tudors and Stuarts, the House of Hanover, and the Windsors. Click on the portrait of each monarch and get a short description of them, see their family tree, and find links to more information.
