NetSmartz
“Every year more and more children of all ages go online to study, have fun, and communicate with the world at large. Just as the numbers of kids online have grown, so have the dangers they face. The NetSmartz Workshop was created to meet that growing need in an unprecedented way.” NetSmartz
The NetSmartz website presents internet safety information to multiple audiences: parents and guardians, kids, teens, educators, and law enforcement. Each audience receives information in a way that appropriately addresses their needs and age range. For parents and guardians, the site provides a tipline, an FAQ section, and a place to ask questions regarding children’s internet safety. For younger children, animated videos are available that focus on issues such as passwords, viruses, protecting personal information, and other cyber safety rules. There are also activities and games related to internet safety, created with high quality 3D graphics. The teens section of the site is presented in the style of a comic book or graphic novel, with characters highlighting cyber bullying and social networking.
A variety of resources for teaching students about internet safety can be found in the educators section, including videos, activity cards, and vignettes. Most materials are also available in Spanish, and they have been helpfully organized according to grade level appropriateness. All of the free downloads and other educational materials can be found at http://www.netsmartz.org/education/.
