Welcome to Whyville!

Whyville is a virtual world of close to 2 million citizens, where technology is used to actively engage students in a unique interactive learning experience. The site was created in 1999 by Numedeon Inc., a company founded by scientists with an interest in using virtual worlds to promote learning. They launched Whyville as a tool to engage young people, particularly those in the middle grades, in constructive educational activities. Inside Whyville, citizens learn about subjects such as art history, science, nutrition, journalism, civics, and economics. Whyville works directly with organizations such as the Getty Museum, NASA, the School Nutrition Association, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to bring educational content to kids in an interactive manner. Citizens can earn clams by playing educational games, chat with others from around the world, get involved in the simulated government, take part in online book discussions, and more. Becoming a citizen of Whyville requires a short, free registration process.
